Big Brothers Big Sisters

Programs

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cass County we provide three programs:

Community Based Program:
This is where an adult is matched with a child between the ages of 5-18. They do things on their own and their activities can include things such as watching movies, playing board games, walking the trails, going to the park, & just hanging out. The possibilities are endless. It just depends on the likes and dislikes of the individuals. National studies prove that Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors can make a positive impact on children. Relative to their peers without Big Brothers or Big Sisters, Little Brothers and Sisters are:

  • 53% less likely to skip school
  • 37% less likely to skip a class
  • 33% less likely to hit someone
  • 46% less likely to start using drugs
  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
  • More confident in their school work
  • Better able to get along with their family

Local Hero Program:
In this program an adult or high school student is matched with a child in either elementary or middle school. They see each other only at the school, during the school day. The day and time are set up according to each of their schedules. The mentor takes the child out of the classroom and works with them one-on-one. They do things such as study for tests, help with homework, read to each other, and play quiet games. The main role of this is for them to become friends and help the child in the areas the child needs help in.

Afterschool Programs:
These are currently put on at three elementary schools in Logansport. Columbia, Fairview, and Franklin. The programs last 8-10 weeks. The program is for 4th & 5th grades. We meet twice per week. Our main focus is teaching the children the importance of staying in school and not to do drugs, alcohol, or tobacco. They are provided with a drink/snack, we have homework time, and then group activities. The group activities can be anything from playing kickball, boardgames, playing outside (when weather permits) but we always do some anti drug, alcohol, & tobacco messages. The children in this program always have fun!
